The VR Performance VR-F80M-170T is a lightweight titanium valved exhaust designed for the BMW F80 M3 and F82/F83 M4 (2015–2020), powered by BMW’s S55 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six.

The system uses pie-cut and mandrel-bent titanium tubing, combining relatively large-flow passages with low material mass.

🧠 Explanation: why titanium + valves works so well

Think of the exhaust as three systems simultaneously:

1. Gas-flow system
The S55 produces substantial exhaust flow because its two turbochargers are extracting energy from the exhaust stream. A properly sized true-dual 2.75-inch system provides a relatively low-restriction path while avoiding an unnecessarily huge pipe diameter.

2. Acoustic system
The valvetronic mechanism changes the exhaust’s effective flow/acoustic path. Closed valves make the car considerably more civilised; opening them allows a much more aggressive exhaust character.

So you essentially get:

VALVES CLOSED → refined / quieter
VALVES OPEN → louder / harder / more aggressive

That’s particularly useful on an F80/F82 because the S55’s personality changes dramatically with exhaust volume.

3. Mass system
Titanium’s big advantage is its strength-to-weight ratio. The manufacturer lists this system at approximately 23.2 kg, while also describing it as substantially lighter than the stock system.

Removing mass from the rear of the car is more interesting dynamically than simply saying “lighter = faster.”

Less rear overhang mass can slightly reduce the rotational inertia of the vehicle around its vertical axis, contributing to a more responsive feeling during rapid direction changes.

🔥 The S55 sound philosophy

The F8x M3/M4 isn’t really about producing the deepest V8-type sound. The S55’s character is different:

low rpm: deep turbocharged mechanical tone

mid rpm: increasingly metallic and urgent

high rpm: aggressive straight-six/turbo character

valves open: much greater acoustic intensity

The burnt titanium quad tips then visually reinforce the motorsport-oriented character.

⚡ Performance expectations

It’s important not to interpret “increased horsepower and torque” as meaning the exhaust alone will transform an F80 into a dramatically more powerful car. The actual gain depends heavily on the rest of the exhaust system, catalytic configuration, ECU calibration and engine setup.

The bigger immediate benefits are:

  • reduced exhaust-system mass
  • potentially improved exhaust flow
  • more aggressive sound
  • switchable acoustic character
  • strong visual presence
  • excellent foundation for a modified S55

The manufacturer specifically advertises increased horsepower and torque, but doesn’t provide a universally applicable dyno figure in the specifications I found.

🏁 Where it sits in an F80/F82 build

I’d characterize the VR Performance system as:

Stock → OEM+ exhaust → VR titanium valvetronic → aggressive track-oriented system

Its strongest combination is S55 + titanium + valves + quad tips.

For a road-driven F80/F82, the valves are arguably the most important feature: you don’t need the car screaming constantly. You can have a relatively restrained personality when appropriate and unleash the S55 when the road and conditions allow.

The verdict: 9/10 for an aggressive street/enthusiast F8x build.

The clever part isn’t simply “titanium exhaust = more power.” It’s the combination of mass reduction + flow capacity + acoustic control + S55 character in one system.
