🧠 What makes it special?

Think of the EJ25 cylinder head as the engine’s airflow control centre.

The turbo pushes air toward the head → the intake valves control how much enters → combustion occurs → exhaust valves evacuate the gases.

Tomei attacks this area by changing the valve size, valvetrain strength and camshaft profile rather than simply increasing boost.

🔥 Why the 1 mm oversize valves matter

This is one of the most interesting parts.

A larger valve can provide a greater potential curtain area around the valve when it opens. Combined with the high-lift cams, the head can move substantially more air.

The philosophy is:

larger valve → greater flow potential → aggressive cam lift/duration → better cylinder filling → greater high-RPM breathing

But there is an important distinction:

More airflow capacity does not automatically mean more horsepower.

The turbocharger, intake manifold, exhaust manifold, turbine, intercooler, compression ratio and ECU calibration must all be capable of exploiting the head.

⚙️ The camshaft is the real character changer

The 260° intake / 264° exhaust cam specification is considerably more performance-oriented than a conservative street cam.

The effect is essentially to keep the valves involved with airflow for a larger portion of the engine cycle.

At higher RPM, that gives the engine more opportunity to breathe.

So the character changes from:

→ strong low/mid-range response
→ moderate airflow demand
→ conservative valve motion

to:

🏎️ Why titanium retainers?

The titanium retainers reduce valvetrain mass.

That’s important because the valve assembly has to reverse direction extremely rapidly.

Lower reciprocating mass means the valve spring has an easier job controlling the valve at high RPM.

Conceptually:

less valvetrain mass → lower inertia → better valve control → greater RPM/headroom

The package also uses high-lift-compatible valve springs, which is essential because the aggressive cams demand stronger control.

So 234040 isn’t simply an EJ25 head that fits every EJ25. The AVCS and engine-generation configuration matter enormously.

🧠 The bigger engineering picture

The beauty of this component is that Tomei isn’t trying to make the EJ25 powerful through one giant modification.

⚠️ One crucial point

This isn’t really a sensible “bolt it onto a stock EJ25 and instantly gain huge power” modification.

It’s a foundation component for a properly engineered EJ25 build. Cam timing, piston-to-valve clearance, compression ratio, turbo selection, fuel system and ECU calibration all need to be considered together.

That’s why the Tomei head makes much more sense in a built EJ25 than as an isolated upgrade.
