The JUN AUTO GT Surge Tank is essentially a high-performance replacement for the 2JZ-GTE’s intake plenum/surge tank. Its job is not simply to make the intake “bigger”; JUN engineered the plenum volume, runner geometry, runner length and airflow distribution as one system. 


🧠 What is the surge tank actually doing?

Think of the intake system like this:

Turbo → intercooler → throttle body → JUN plenum → individual runners → 6 cylinders

The plenum acts as an air reservoir and pressure-distribution chamber.

When the six cylinders are drawing air at different moments, the plenum helps prevent one cylinder from seeing substantially different airflow conditions from another.

JUN’s important point is the balance of plenum volume:

  • Too small: pressure fluctuations become excessive and cylinder-to-cylinder distribution can suffer.
  • Too large: pressure pulses become excessively damped, reducing the beneficial inertial/ram effect that helps fill cylinders at higher rpm.
  • Optimized volume: maintains useful pressure-wave behaviour while providing adequate airflow capacity for a tuned engine. 

🔥 Why this matters on a 2JZ-GTE

The 2JZ is famous for making substantial power with increased boost and airflow. Once the engine’s turbo system, intercooling and cylinder-head airflow are substantially upgraded, the intake manifold becomes part of the airflow equation rather than merely a connecting component.

The JUN design uses an internal curved/funnel-like airflow arrangement intended to improve how incoming air is distributed inside the plenum and toward the runners. 

JUN specifically describes this as a way of efficiently drawing the nearby air around the funnel entrance rather than relying simply on making the upper portion of the funnel larger.

JUN’s current catalogue identifies 2015M-T002 specifically for the non-VVT-i 2JZ-GTE. The product is now listed as discontinued by JUN, although some specialist retailers still list it. 

🚀 Where the performance comes from

The interesting part is that a surge tank doesn’t create power like a turbocharger does.

Instead:

Better plenum geometry

more controlled pressure distribution

better cylinder filling

better volumetric efficiency

stronger high-rpm airflow potential

This becomes increasingly relevant as the turbo is capable of supplying more air than the original intake system was designed around.

So the JUN part is best viewed as an air-management component rather than simply a “big intake manifold.”

🏁 The 2JZ build where it makes the most sense

I’d put the JUN GT Surge Tank relatively late in a serious 2JZ build:

Large turbo → efficient intercooler → suitable throttle body → JUN GT Surge Tank → cylinder head → cams → exhaust

On a relatively standard 2JZ, the benefit is much harder to justify. On a properly engineered high-output build, however, the intake manifold becomes an important part of matching the turbo’s airflow characteristics to the cylinder head.

One important installation detail: JUN specifies that the kit doesn’t include the throttle body, injectors or pipes, and its throttle-body arrangement involves a modified Nissan/Infiniti component. 

In enthusiast terms: this is a very Japanese/JUN approach to the 2JZ—rather than simply bolting on the largest possible plenum, it treats the intake manifold as an acoustic and fluid-dynamic component designed to control pressure waves, airflow distribution and high-rpm cylinder filling.
