VR Performance BMW M5 F90 Titanium Valvetronic Exhaust System VR-F90M5-170T

The VR Performance Titanium Valvetronic Exhaust System is a premium cat-back exhaust engineered for the BMW M5 F90 (2018–2022) with the S63 4.4L twin-turbo V8

It is designed to reduce weight, increase exhaust flow, and produce a more aggressive V8 soundtrack while preserving everyday usability through the factory electronic valve system.

Technical Specifications

  • Material: Aerospace-grade titanium
  • Configuration: Full cat-back exhaust
  • Pipe Diameter: 80 mm (3.15 in) mandrel-bent piping
  • Tips: Quad 90 mm burnt titanium tips with VR logo
  • Valve Control: Compatible with OEM electronic exhaust valves
  • Compatibility: OEM downpipes or aftermarket race downpipes
  • Fitment: BMW M5 F90 (2018–2022)

Engineering Advantages

1. Lightweight Titanium Construction
Compared with the heavy stainless-steel factory exhaust, titanium substantially lowers rear-end mass, helping:

  • Faster weight transfer
  • Slightly sharper turn-in
  • Reduced rotational inertia
  • Improved suspension response over uneven roads

Although peak horsepower gains are modest, the weight reduction contributes to a more responsive driving feel.

2. Higher Exhaust Flow
The larger 80 mm piping reduces exhaust restriction, allowing the S63’s twin turbochargers to expel gases more efficiently. Benefits include:

  • Quicker turbo spool
  • Reduced backpressure
  • Improved high-RPM breathing
  • Better throttle response
  • Stronger acceleration after 4,000 rpm

3. OEM Valve Integration
Unlike some aftermarket systems requiring separate controllers, this exhaust works with BMW’s factory M Modes:

  • Comfort: quieter for commuting
  • Sport/Sport+: valves open automatically for maximum sound

This maintains factory-like convenience without sacrificing performance.

4. Titanium Acoustics
Titanium naturally produces:

  • Higher-frequency exhaust harmonics
  • Sharper V8 growl
  • Cleaner turbo whistle
  • More exotic tone than stainless steel
  • Pronounced overrun pops while avoiding excessive rasp when properly tuned

Estimated Performance Gains

Actual gains depend on engine calibration and supporting modifications.

Configuration

Estimated Gain

Stock ECU

+10 to +18 hp

Stage 1 tune

+15 to +25 hp

High-flow downpipes + tune

+25 to +40 hp

The most noticeable improvement is the reduction in backpressure and enhanced throttle response rather than dramatic peak power increases.

Advantages

  • Excellent titanium craftsmanship
  • Significant weight reduction
  • Aggressive V8 sound
  • OEM valve compatibility
  • Compatible with aftermarket downpipes
  • Direct bolt-on installation
  • High corrosion resistance

Disadvantages

  • Premium price
  • Titanium can transmit more high-frequency resonance than stainless steel
  • Performance gains alone are modest without ECU tuning
  • Maximum sound benefits are achieved when paired with upgraded downpipes and calibration

Verdict

For BMW F90 M5 owners seeking a premium titanium exhaust without reaching the price of an Akrapovič system, the VR Performance VR-F90M5-170T offers an excellent balance of sound, weight savings, OEM integration, and performance.

It is particularly well suited to Stage 1 and Stage 2 S63 builds, where the freer-flowing cat-back complements ECU tuning and upgraded downpipes while retaining daily drivability.
